The second generation Edge comes with a choice of three gasoline engines: a 2.0-liter EcoBoost I4 turbo, a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 turbo, and a 3.5-liter Duratec V6. As a diesel option, the Edge also offered a 2.0-liter Duratorq I4 engine from 2016-2018, which was replaced with a more efficient 2.0-liter EcoBlue I4 engine from 2018 onwards.
Luckily enough the water pump had been replaced at 85k in November of 2015, after complaints of no heat and rough idling above 2000 RPM. Currently the car has 101k on it, so if the minimum of failure expectancy of 65k miles holds true I have about 40k miles before it needs to be replaced (again). The service manager quoted me a price of $1200
3.5L Ti-VCT Reliability First of all, with the timing camshaft applied, it enables the engine to have natural aspirations. Second, the firing system used is coil on plug (COP) with a sequential multi-port fuel injection fuel system. It works better with a cooling system of 14.25 liters or 3.76 gallons.
The 3.5L PowerBoost engine is designed for longevity. It features forged steel connecting rods, aluminum pistons, sodium-filled exhaust valves, and chain-driven dual overhead camshafts. Ford claims that the F-150 3.5L PowerBoost engine can travel as much as 750 miles before refueling. The vehicle is also backed by a 5-year/60,000-mile warranty.
The water pump on the longitudinally mounted 3.5L V6 like the F-150 is external, not internal like on FWD applications, therefore you do not need to worry about coolant leaking into the oil. Coolant hoses is an age thing not a mileage thing, as are most other rubber parts (belts, bushings, seals, etc)
Posted April 24, 2017. The 3.5L and 3.7L are strong engines but lack that off the line power you get with the ecoboost engines. They do perform better at higher RPM but I find myself flooring the 3.7L in the MKX to get it moving whereas with the EB (even the small 2.0) you get instant torque at low RPM.
The most powerful F150 engines are the 5.0 Coyote and 3.5 EcoBoost, with the EcoBoost taking the top prize. Ford rates the standard twin-turbo 3.5 EcoBoost V6 at 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. However, that still pales to the 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque from the high-output 3.5 EcoBoost.
Brand New 0-60 92 F150 Flareside - YouTube. The 2v 4.6L is generally considered underpowered. It makes 248hp and about 300lb/ft of torque. Its not particularly fast, however I think it might outrun a 1992 351 V8 because there is a considerable power difference between the two248hp in the 4.6L vs 210hp in the 351.
The last of the commonest 3.5L Ti-VCT V6 (Cyclone & Duratec) engine issue is the water pump failure. The pump helps to circulate coolant around the engine to dissipate temperature rise. By design, the water pump of the 3.5 V6 Ti-VCT V6 engine is mounted beneath the timing seal. The pump is driven by the timing chain.
